Eight female bodies have been recovered from a Nairobi slum according to Kenyan police.
It was gathered that the first six bodies were found on Friday, with an additional three discovered on Saturday.
“They were severely dismembered in different states of decomposition and left in sacks.
“I would like to assure the public that we are committed to conducting transparent, thorough and swift investigations,” Kenya’s acting police chief, Douglas Kanja, said on Sunday during a press briefing.
The proximity of the dumpsite to a police station, mere meters away, has raised questions about potential police involvement.
The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been called in to investigate, alongside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
“As the police investigations unfold, IPOA is keenly independently undertaking preliminary inquiries to establish whether there was any police involvement in the deaths, or failure to act to prevent them,” IPOA said.
The head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, said the ages of the victims ranged between about 18 to 30 and that all had been killed and butchered in the same manner.
“Are we dealing with a cult that is associated with criminal activities, are we dealing with serial killers?
“We could even be dealing with rogue medical practitioners,” he said at the press briefing alongside Kanja.
The city morgue is currently conducting postmortem examinations to determine the cause of death and gather further evidence.
