Drivers of commercial and articulated vehicles have been mandated to use retro-reflective tapes in Nasarawa State or face being apprehended.

The enforcement and apprehension of the defaulters were announced on Thursday by the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nasarawa State Command, SC Lucy Samuel-Mhii.

She stated this during the launch of the aggressive public sensitization and enlightenment campaign in the state.

Our correspondent reports that the sensitisation was carried out in English, pidgin and Hausa languages, respectively, to educate fleet operators and commercial vehicle operators on the benefits of using retro-reflective stickers.

According to the sector commander, “The campaign targets motor parks, media houses, and various state gatherings, highlighting the importance of retro-reflective tapes ahead of full enforcement. Retro-reflective tapes are crucial for commercial vehicles, offering numerous benefits.”

She identified the benefits of retro-reflective stickers to include increased visibility of vehicles, improved safety, reduced risk of year-end collisions and conspicuity in emergency situations.

Quoting her, “Reflecting light back reduces crash risks, protecting drivers, passengers, and other road users. The use is in compliance with the FRSC’s mandate to protect lives. It also makes vehicles more conspicuous, reducing rear-end collision likelihood.”

She further said the stickers enhance branding and identification by displaying company logos or information, promoting brand visibility, as well as aiding emergency responders in quickly identifying vehicles involved in accidents or breakdowns.

Retro-reflective stickers lower insurance premiums by reducing accident risks, she said, and appealed to commercial fleet operators “to immediately adhere to the use of retro-reflective stickers or tapes being a simple, yet an effective way to enhance safety and visibility.”
