Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has lost his eldest brother, Engr. Sunday Makinde.
The elder Makinde passed on early Friday morning, January 23, at 65.
A statement by the family leader, the Bada Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Olumuyiwa Makinde, disclosed that Engr. Makinde’s “sudden death occurred at his Ibadan residence at 3:20 a.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025.”
It was learnt that the deceased is “survived by his siblings, including Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as well as children and grandchildren.”
His death came just after the governor recently lost his mother, Mrs. Abigail Makinde, in 2020.
Prominent Nigerians have since been commiserating with the governor following the demise of the brother.
One of them, Rep. Akin Alabi, representating Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency and Chairman, House Committee on Works,
condoled with Gov. Makinde.
Alabi conveyed his sympathy in a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Hameed Ramadan, on Friday.
He acknowledged the pain of losing a loved one, praying for the Makindes and asking for their understand that death is an act of God.
“It is with great sadness that I received the news of the passing of Engr. Sunday Makinde. Losing an elder brother is a deeply painful experience; and my thoughts and prayers are with Governor Seyi Makinde, the Makinde family, the indigenes and residents of Oyo State over this loss,” he said.
Alabi prayed for God’s comfort and strength for Governor Makinde and his family “during this difficult time,” praying that the soul of the departed rests in perfect peace.
“On behalf of myself, my family and the good people of Egbeda/Ona Ara Federal Constituency, I extend my sincere condolences to His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, and the entire Makinde family.
“May God grant you the fortitude to bear this loss, and may Engr. Sunday Makinde’s legacy live on in the hearts of those who loved him,” he stated.
