President Bola Tinubu has assented to two separate bills establishing the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies (FUADS), Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES ),Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who disclosed this on Thursday, February 20, in a statement, explained that the President believes that the specialised institutions will address the educational needs of the populace while driving research and innovation and contributing to the country’s overall economic growth and development.
According to him, Tinubu is optimistic that the institutions will serve as training grounds for developing Agriculture, Science and Technology professionals and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the global economy.
It would be recalled that the National Universities Commission (NUC) recently said the country currently has 63 approved federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities.
In what is turning out to be a month of establishment of new universities, Tinubu had on February 3 this year approved the establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town of Tai, Rivers State,in the Nigeria Delta.
He also okayed the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in educationally marginalized Southern Kaduna and its transformation into a federal university.
