The five governors of the states of the South -East Region of Nigeria, today, resolved to visit President Bola Tinubu to discuss political solutions to the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Governors of states of Imo (Hope Uzodinma), Ebonyi (Francis Nwifuru), Abia (Alex Otti) and Anambra (Charles Soludo) and their Enugu counterpart, Peter Mbah, including Obi of Onitsha, His Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, had converged on Enugu Tuesday morning and made the resolution after their closed door meeting.
Kanu is being held in the custody of the Department of State Services in Abuja. He is being tried over alleged terrorism. He has been in detention since 2021 when he was renditioned from Kenya to Nigeria by Nigeria’s secret security agents in collaboration with their Kenyan counterparts.
Recall that an FCT High Court presided over by Binta Nyako had granted the prayers of Kanu’s lead counsel, Barr Alloy Ejimakor, to seek an out-of-court settlement of Kanu’s case in court.
The resolution of the governors, under the aegis of the Southeast Governors Forum, was contained in a communique issued at the end of the meeting, and read by their chairperson and governor of Imo State, Mr Uzodinma.
Uzodinma added that the forum also resolved to tackle insecurity in the South East.
Our correspondent reports that the increasing insecurity in South East has been attributed to the continued detention of Kanu.
