A two-storey building located at Ekeoyibo Market, Amawbia, in Anambra State, Thursday, collapsed, recording fatal casualties in the process.
The state police command confirmed the incident. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command’s public relations officer, said police operatives had rescued two victims and taken them to the hospital for medical care.
It was gathered that on the directives of the commissioner of police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations led operatives to the scene for on-the-spot assessment.
Ikenga said the area had been cordoned off and rescue operations ongoing.
Traders, who witnessed the collapse, blamed the disaster on substandard engineering work. They claimed that the building’s structural integrity had been compromised.
