Enugu State Commissioner of Police (CP), Kanayo Uzuegbu, has reaffirmed the ban on the sale and unauthorized use of fireworks, commonly known as ‘knockouts’, ‘bangers’, or ‘crackers’, during this festive season.
This was disclosed in a press statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Enugu State Command, Daniel Ndukwe.
The statement noted that the prohibition is designed to prevent criminals from exploiting fireworks to commit crimes, reduce public panic, and mitigate risks to lives and property.
Consequently, CP Uzuegbu warned businesses and individuals engaged in the sale and use of fireworks to desist immediately.
He also called on parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from purchasing or using fireworks, emphasizing that violators will face the full weight of the law.
Furthermore, he cautioned against indiscriminate bush burning during the harmattan season, warning of the legal consequences and grave risks of fire outbreaks which could endanger lives, destroy property, and disrupt the social and economic well-being of the community.
CP Uzuegbu urged residents of Enugu State to remain law-abiding and vigilant, avoiding actions that could jeopardize their safety and security during the yuletide and beyond.
He encouraged the public to report suspected criminals and their activities to the nearest police station, or by calling some listed numbers.
