Newly-installed President General (PG), Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Nze Ozichukwu Fidelis Chukwu, has challenged the Federal Government to release detained leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
He asserted that government has no sufficient reason to keep detaining him.
Kanu was returned to Nigeria from Kenya, where he was arrested, in June, 2021 by the former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari administration and has been in detention since then, facing terrorism-related charges.
Calls for his release have been rising even as some courts had ordered that he be freed.
In a statement issued by Ohanaeze spokesman, Alex Ogbonnia, its PG emphasised that “the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is a moral burden on the Federal Government.”
Chukwu added: “There is no sufficient reason for the prolonged detention of Kanu by the security agency of the state.”
He assured the organization’s National Executive Committee (NEC) that a blueprint will be developed to ensure Ohanaeze not only complements the goodwill of the state but is also positioned to discharge its diverse functions and overcome challenges as they arise.
He further stated that although his tenure is short (barely 27 days), he is determined to leave behind an impressive legacy.
